For this project we are going to use two very common and inexpensive materials and make a colorful, creative basket! This project requires some fine motor skills, but is repetitive, easy to learn and makes a wonderful final product.
Supplies: Paper plate (thinner, not super thick), yarn, scissors, markers/crayons to decorate
Step 1) Cut triangle shaped pieces out from the edge of the plate to make the tabs that you will use to weave with. Make sure that you will get an odd amount of tabs (I cut so that I would get 11 tabs when complete)
Step 2) Fold the tabs inward at the rim on the plate to begin to make the bowl shape.
Step 3) Begin weaving! Tie off the end of the yarn on one of the tabs and then begin to weave. Go outside for one tab and then inside the next in a clockwise direction. Make sure to keep the yarn tight. If the tabs begin to overlap, you can trim them down so they don’t overlap and make weaving difficult.
Step 4) As you weave the basket’s sides will come up and form the bowl shape. Weave all the way up until you get to the tops of the tabs, then tie off the yarn. To keep the yarn from coming off the tabs, bend the left over paper outward to make a rim. Next, decorate the rim, sides and bottom as you see fit.
Now you have a complete basket! It’s an easy, inexpensive project that makes fun and beautiful baskets!
